What is involved in the pre-operative assessment for the cochlear implantation?

Otologic Evaluation
An examination must be performed to determine that there is no active infection or other problem within the middle or inner ear that would preclude the surgical placement of the implant

Audiologic Evaluation
Extensive hearing tests are performed to determine the degree of hearing with and without a hearing aid. Each individual is counseled regarding the potential benefits and limitations of the Cochlear Implant.

Radiographic Evaluation
CT scan and if needed MRI scan are taken to evaluate if the cochlea is suitable for an implant.

OAE
This test helps to determine if electrical stimulation of the auditory nerve (hearing nerve) will result in sound.

Physical Examination
General tests are also performed to ensure that the individual can successfully undergo general anesthesia and surgery.
